Pacific’s Undergraduate Research and Creativity Conference was HUGE for the Carlson lab. Our amazing graduate students worked hard to support our brilliant undergraduate research team to success. We presented three posters, two on co-culture and one on isolation work. Check out our abstracts below!

Ananya Awarded SURF
Ananya Srivatsan, our ambitious pre-dentistry undergraduate researcher, has been awarded Pacific’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship! Her project will be looking at the induction of secondary metabolite production by treating with chemical elicitors based on the work of Bill Baker’s group at the University of South Florida.
Elisabeth and Abby Awarded Stauffer Grant
Elisabeth Garner and Abby Van de Water have been awarded Stauffer Fellowships for the summer of 2023! Abby will be working with our growing actinomycete collection while Elisabeth will be working with Ananya on our fungal collection!

Carlson Lab Takes ASP by Storm!
American Society of Pharmacognosy Meeting in Charleston, SC! Kara and Savannah gave excellent posters, Dr. Carlson gave a podium lecture attended by her brother, and Kara won a travel award. Charleston was gorgeous but hot!
Muna Awarded Stauffer Scholarship
Munachismo Aghasili was awarded a Stauffer Scholarship for summer research in 2022. Her presentation will be in August.

Kara Talbott was awarded the Lynn Brady Travel Award from the American Society of Pharmacognosy to attend the annual meeting in Charleston, SC. Congratulations Kara!!

SURF Canceled due to Lab Closure
Congratulations to Ria Speth and Adrian Szeto for their impressive applications to the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships. Both were denied full consideration due to lab closure but they deserve a round of applause!

Carlson Lab Awarded SAAG Funding
University of the Pacific Faculty Research Committee awarded the project entitled “New Drugs from Natural Sources: Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) Increases Throughput of Undergraduate Research” a total of $3,100 to move our fractionation to a Thermo-Fisher SPE system.
Collection trip to Puerto Rico
The College of the Pacific, College Research Committee funded the first collection trip to Puerto Rico for the Carlson Lab. “Exploring the biodiversity of Puerto Rico for antibiotic and anticancer drug discovery” was funded to the tune of $3,000.
